Providing the necessary know-how to perform the tasks of the Hydrographic Officer on
board survey vessels and at hydrographic services (technical divisions). The course provides the
required know-how to be certified as Category B Surveyor after two years of experience gathered
during practical activity.


1) High-school degree, preferably scientific or technical;

2) Fluent English (minimum level: IELTS 5.5 / CAMBRIDGE FCE / TOEFL iBT 72-94).


– Phase “0” – 4 weeks – to provide the basic knowledge required to attend phase “1” (from mid January to mid February);
– Phase “1” – 21 weeks – to deal with technical and specialized matters in the field of hydro-oceanography (from mid February to mid July);
– Phase “2” consists of in about 8 weeks training onboard Italian Navy Survey vessels/boat/Survey Teams (from mid July to first week of October).


– The course will start with at least 10 participants.
– Attendance at least 80% of the lessons of phase 1 is required.
– Participation in the intermediate tests of the individual modules is mandatory in order to allow the teacher to take note of the preparation of the attendant.
– It is mandatory taking part in the exams at the end of phase 1.
– Participation of at least 4 weeks of phase 2 and completion of the Comprehensive Final Field Project (CFFP) is mandatory


Upon completion of the course, a certificate of attendance of the Iho Category ‘B’ Hydrographic Surveyors Course is released. After two years of certified experience gathered during practical activity, it is possible request to the Italian Hydrographic Institute the Professional certification of Category ‘B’ Hydrographic Surveyor.
