This five-day course provides participants with a clear and practical introduction to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) and its associated Code. It is intended for maritime professionals who need to understand the purpose, structure, and key provisions of the Convention. The course explains how STCW sets global standards for seafarer competence, certification, and watchkeeping, and how these standards are applied by maritime administrations, training providers, and ship operators. By the end of the course, participants will be familiar with the main requirements of the Convention, the responsibilities of different stakeholders, and the procedures ensuring compliance and continuous improvement in maritime safety and training quality.
The objective of this course is to provide participants with a thorough understanding of the principles and requirements of the STCW Convention and Code. Upon completion, participants will be able to identify the main components of the Convention, understand the roles and responsibilities of the parties involved in its implementation, and apply the knowledge gained to ensure compliance with international standards of maritime training, certification, and watchkeeping.
The target group for this training course will be personnel from Maritime Administrations of STCW Parties who are responsible for effective implemntation of the STCW COnvention, 1978, as amended. In particular, their responsobilities should include ensuring of compliance with regulations I/7 and I/8 by their Administration. Participants should have a full understanding of the requirements and standards of the STCW Convention and STCW Code, be conversant with the implementation of all provisions of the Convention, have at least three years experience in the implementation of the STCW Convention, and they should be proficient in the English language to gain the full benefit of this course.
