Scope
This three-day course provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, its objectives, principles, and practical application in the safe operation of ships and the prevention of pollution. The course is designed to familiarize maritime professionals with the structure and requirements of the Code, emphasizing the development, implementation, and continual improvement of a Safety Management System (SMS). Participants will learn how the ISM Code contributes to establishing a safety culture within shipping companies and onboard vessels, how audits and verifications are conducted, and how responsibilities are shared between ship and shore management. Through case studies and interactive discussions, the course aims to promote a clear appreciation of the ISM Code as a cornerstone of modern maritime safety and regulatory compliance.
Objectives
The objective of this course is to provide participants with the knowledge and understanding necessary to interpret and apply the provisions of the International Safety Management (ISM) Code effectively. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

Explain the purpose, scope, and principles of the ISM Code;

Understand the functional requirements of a Safety Management System (SMS) and its documentation;

Identify the roles and responsibilities of company and shipboard personnel in achieving safety and pollution prevention objectives;

Entry Standards
Participants must have a good command of the English language, sufficient to follow lectures and participate in discussions. There are no strict prerequisites for attending this course; however, it is recommended for individuals with a general understanding of maritime operations or safety management practices. The course is suitable for shipboard officers, company safety and quality personnel, Designated Persons Ashore (DPAs), port and flag State officers, and others involved in the implementation or oversight of the ISM Code.
